Three CFL teams have separated from the pack on the Grey Cup odds leaderboard at the mid-September mark.

The latest: The Saskatchewan Roughriders are alone in first place, and they've been the Grey Cup frontrunners for a while. The only other above-.500 teams, the Calgary Stampeders and Hamilton Tiger-Cats, both also hold odds of 3-to-1 or shorter.

The favourites: Roughriders (+200)

It's been a pretty long time since the Roughriders have even reached the Grey Cup. A dozen years, in fact.

But thanks to a 10-3 record this season, the Riders are in a promising position to return to the CFL's championship stage.

It's not like Saskatchewan has been completely hapless in recent years. The team has played in the West Division final in three of the past five seasons ... but Winnipeg had its number each time.

What has buoyed the Riders to so much success this year? A truly balanced approach.

  • Saskatchewan is top-two in the CFL in total and scoring defence, as well as total offence.
  • The Riders' quarterback (Trevor Harris) is No. 2 in passer rating, their running back (A.J. Ouellette) is second in rushing yards, and they have two of the seven CFL receivers with 800+ yards (KeeSean Johnson, Dohnte Meyers).

Saskatchewan is on a bye in Week 16, which is good timing after a surprising blowout loss against Montreal on Sept. 13. The Riders will have some time to rest and reset before the five-game home stretch to follow.

Aside from Montreal, the only other team to beat the Roughriders is Calgary (July 12, Aug. 23).

CFL betting notes

  • Going 2-0 against the Grey Cup favourites is quite a feather in the cap of the Stampeders (+275). Losing by multiple scores to Edmonton on Sept. 6 is not. We've seen the very good and the very bad from Calgary this year, but the positives have far outweighed the negatives. With the No. 1 scoring defence and the veteran leadership of QB Vernon Adams Jr., this is a dangerous group.
  • The Tiger-Cats (+300) are in a pretty cozy spot in the CFL's East Division, with a two-game lead on the Alouettes — and the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Als. Hamilton can score with the best of them, thanks in large part to the epic season that wideout Kenny Lawler is having (88 yards/game, 10 TDs in 13 games).
  • The Alouettes (+700) were frontrunners most of the season, but the extended absence of QB Davis Alexander has complicated things. Alexander, who hasn't played since mid-July, is reportedly targeting a return in September. Montreal is 4-0 in Alexander's starts and 2-7 otherwise.
  • As long as Nathan Rourke is under centre, the Lions (+1,500) will have somewhat of a chance. Rourke ranks third in the CFL in passer rating and first in yards per attempt. BC's defence is somehow allowing the third-most points despite yielding the second-fewest yards.
