Best odds to win the Stanley Cup
The favourites: Oilers and Hurricanes (+650)
The only two teams inside 10-to-1 odds happen to be the co-favourites.
Edmonton and Carolina share +650 odds, but it's not because they've been the best regular season teams.
The Oilers are first in the Pacific Division but were just okay ahead of the 4 Nations Face-Off. Edmonton won five of 10 games before the pause, doing just enough to cling onto a slim lead over the Golden Knights.
Leon Draisaitl has been the team's most productive player this season. He leads the squad with 40 goals and 83 points. He's also the odds-on favourite to win the Hart Trophy.
Connor McDavid's brilliance can't be ignored, either. Somehow 71 points in 49 games is a down season for the three-time Hart Trophy winner.
Stuart Skinner (.900 save percentage) and Calvin Pickard (.901) have been solid yet unspectacular between the pipes. If there's any reason for skepticism with Edmonton, goaltending is it.
Carolina's odds to win it all were bolstered by a mid-season blockbuster. The Hurricanes acquired Mikko Rantanen and Taylor Hall in a three-team deal involving Colorado and Chicago.
The addition of Rantanen gives Carolina an elite offensive weapon, something it has lacked in previous years. Stars like Sebastian Aho, Seth Jarvis and Andrei Svechnikov have always boasted strong all-around skills, but none has Rantanen's offensive upside.
The sum of the team's defensive parts is greater than the whole, as no individual player is turning heads. But the Canes have plenty of mobility and defensive prowess that make their defence difficult to break down.
Pyotr Kochetkov has carried the load in net with a respectable .904 save percentage. Frederik Andersen's return and .914 save percentage suggest that maybe he can take over the top spot.
Canadian team odds
Is this the year for Toronto (+1,200)?
The team's top tormentor, Boston, is currently sitting outside of a playoff spot. Toronto, meanwhile, is only three points behind Florida for the top spot in the Atlantic Division.
New head coach Craig Berube has brought a different style of hockey to the Maple Leafs, which has led to a lot of close, low-scoring contests.
Tied with the Leafs are the surging Jets. Winnipeg has won eight consecutive games ahead of the pause and has a league-best +68 goal differential.
Mark Scheifele (31 goals) and Kyle Connor (30) are the only pair of teammates with 30-plus goals this year while Connor Hellebuyck leads the NHL in goals-against average (2.06), save percentage (.925) and shutouts (six).
Ottawa (+4,000) is next on the list among Canadian squads. The Senators are holding onto a wild-card spot but are only four points away from a top-three seed in the Atlantic.
Cup Odds notes
- The Panthers, who are the defending Cup champions, still hold the same +1,000 price from back when the season started. They elected to essentially run it back with the same roster and are 34-20-3.
- The Avalanche have played their way to the third-best odds at +1,000. The Avs are in a wild-card spot but are just four points back of second in the Central Division. Colorado added Martin Necas from Carolina in its three-way trade, and he has 64 points across 57 games.
- The Capitals are an intriguing option for bettors. Washington holds a 10-point lead in the Metropolitan Division but has the longest odds (+1,500) of any team sitting first in its division.
