Week 1 at a glance: The NFL is coming out swinging. Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills vs. Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens. The revamped Green Bay Packers vs. the loaded Detroit Lions. And Aaron Rodgers is making his Pittsburgh Steelers debut against the team that released him, the New York Jets.

Key storylines:

  • Jerry Jones loves it when his Dallas Cowboys are in the spotlight. Well, he got his wish after trading three-time All-Pro pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Packers. The result? Green Bay is favoured against Detroit, which won a league-high 15 games last year.
  • Steelers vs. Jets could not be more popcorn-emoji worthy. Rodgers' tenure with the Jets was a complete disaster, but the 41-year-old is out to prove he has something left in the tank. Oh, and Justin Fields, who's now under centre in the Meadowlands, can also call "revenge game" against Mike Tomlin's group, which cast him aside for Russell Wilson last season.
  • Let's circle back to the week's biggest matchup: Ravens vs. Bills. Buffalo went undefeated at home last year and eliminated Baltimore from the playoffs in a nailbiter at Highmark Stadium. The last two MVPs will be eager to make a statement in a Sunday Night Football pick'em.
  • Cam Ward, the 2025 first overall pick, has the toughest landing spot imaginable: a road date with the Denver Broncos. The Tennessee Titans are 8.5-point 'dogs against last year's No. 3 scoring defence.

Week 1 betting notes

  • Speaking of Ward, rookie quarterbacks making their first start on the road haven't fared well since the 1970 NFL merger (8-21 straight up, 3-14-2 ATS, per Action Network). JJ McCarthy, while not technically a rookie, is making his first start for the Minnesota Vikings on the road versus the Chicago Bears — on Monday Night Football.
  • Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals need to start this season off on the right foot, but can they? Cincy is 1-4 SU and ATS in Burrow's season openers. The Bengals are 5-point road favourites in Cleveland.
  • Divisional underdogs are 40-41-2 SU in Week 1 since 2010. Divisional home underdogs are 23-7 ATS in that same span. Cleveland falls into that latter category alongside Seattle, Chicago and Atlanta.
  • Austin Ekeler tops the depth chart in a crowded Washington Commanders running back room. He should be a player to watch against the New York Giants, who allowed the fifth-most rushing and seventh-most receiving yards per game to RBs last year.
  • Last year, favourites went 13-3 SU and 9-7 ATS in Week 1. But that was only the second time since 2019 that favourites came out ahead ATS in the first weekend, also going 9-7 in 2020.

Biggest spreads: Cowboys vs. Eagles (-8.5), Titans vs. Broncos (-8), Cardinals (-6.5) vs. Saints

Highest totals: Ravens vs. Bills (50.5), Bengals vs. Browns (47.5), Buccaneers vs. Falcons (47.5)
