The Toronto Blue Jays are hefty odds-on favourites to win the AL East with just a couple of weeks to play.

The latest: Toronto has had MLB's best offence since the all-star break, and the club bolstered its rotation by acquiring 2020 AL Cy Young winner Shane Bieber at the deadline. It's a three-horse race for the division, with the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox hanging around, but their time is running out.

Blue Jays AL East odds

With fewer than 15 games to go, Toronto has well exceeded its preseason win projection. This club has turned a lot of heads and rebounded nicely from a lost season in 2024.

The Jays made some notable moves at the trade deadline, adding a handful of pieces with Bieber as the headliner:

  • SP Shane Bieber
  • RP Seranthony Dominguez
  • RP Louis Varland
  • 1B Ty France

Bieber has 30 strikeouts and a 3.72 ERA through five starts (29.0 innings) and looks like a smart buy. The bullpen additions have been less successful ... but that can swing in a matter of weeks (if not days).

Toronto went 1-2 vs. New York in a recent series (Sept. 5-7), but life is still good for the Jays right now. They hold head-to-head tiebreakers over both the Yankees and Red Sox.

Entering play on Sept. 15, Toronto held a 4.0-game lead over the Yankees and a 5.5-game lead over the Red Sox in the division.

Toronto has four series to go, and only one is against a playoff-expectant team (Red Sox).

FanGraphs gives the Jays a 92.5% chance of winning the AL East entering play on Sept. 15.

AL East notes

  • New York hasn't had sole possession of first place in the AL East since Canada Day, but the team did gain a bit of ground with a recent series win over Toronto. The Yankees have the weakest remaining strength of schedule, with their 13 games coming against the White Sox, Orioles and Twins.
  • The good news for Boston is that it has a chance to pick up some wins over Toronto in their upcoming series at Rogers Centre (Sept. 23-25). The bad news is the Red Sox could be out of AL East contention by then. Dropping two of three games against the Yankees this past weekend didn't help.
